Unwoven and Intertwined is a small mixed media sculpture consisting of steel rod and thousands of seed beads. Its form resembles that of the double helix shape of which the human DNA is constructed. However, unlike DNA, this double helix only has one connected base pair. All of the other bases are spiraling off from one another.
The concept for this piece was originally inspired by my love of beading. I wanted to craft a tribute to the artform that originally fueled my artistic journey. The beadwork stems from my Native American heritage and was the art medium that originally had me sold on spending my life making art. However, I desired to make a piece that possessed a more complex and interpretative meaning. I then subverted this basic DNA idea into the chaotic spiral the piece is now. I tried to convey the idea of “potential and possibility”. Every person is different from one another and has their own fated path in life. However, this piece also can be interpreted to mean that each of the unique dowels is a possible option, but the connected dowel is the true path of life.
